Blind Penang student get straight A’s in SPM, finishes top of his class

Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang and Secretary-General of opposition party DAP, took to his Facebook account to praise one of his state’s graduating high school students.

Kenzon Yeoh’s achievement of straight A’s for his SPM results (high school exit exam) are made even more impressive given the fact that Kenzon is blind.

He did not let his disability hinder him from finishing as the top student in his school, and when media interest in his results came knocking, he was quick to thank all of those who helped him to where he is today.

Kenzon praised his parents, who sent him to SMK Georgetown across the bridge from his home in Bukit Mertajam, for a better education. He added that his primary and secondary teachers were also a huge influence on him, as well as the St Nicholas Home for the Blind, the Penang state government, local assemblywoman Lydia Ong, and of course, his supportive friends.

He added that he hopes to become a computer programmer, so that he can help others who are visually impaired or disabled.

Sorry — can we ask you to pass the tissues over? We’re having a moment.

In addition to winning our collective hearts, Kenzon also received an RM500 (US$125) prize from the Chief Minister, who commended his tenacity and hard work.
