Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed today that a national was killed and 10 others were hurt in a tour bus accident in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey yesterday evening.

Thirty-five Malaysians were traveling in the group, which was ferrying tourists between Pamukkale and Cappadocia.

“The mishap took place at Afyonkarahisar, causing one death, while 10 more people were injured including four who were seriously hurt,” an official from the ministry told national news wire Bernama.

“The victims are being treated at the Afyonkarahisar Hospital, located about 300 km from Ankara. The Malaysian Representative Office in Ankara (Malawakil Ankara) is compiling further information from the local authorities on the matter.”

They added that a consular official is on their way to see the group, and aid will be given.

Those injured in the crash were employees of the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS), all working in their corporate communication division.

Malaysia’s Embassy in Turkey informed PKNS of the unfortunate accident; however, the company still awaiting an official statement on the incident.

“PKNS is still waiting for an official statement from the Malaysian Embassy in Turkey, which is gathering the latest information on the incident from the local authorities and the hospital at Afyonkarahisar,” reads a company’s official statement on the matter.

“We will divulge the latest developments on the incident from time to time.”

Visits to the picturesque country are not without their dangers. Another Malaysian national died in 2017 after being bitten by a deadly spider after a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia.
