Putrajaya Calling: SR1M SIM cards launch today, start at RM5.90

1Malaysia’s foray into your smartphone began in earnest today, with the launch of the 1Malaysia People’s SIM Card (SR1M) initiative.

Aimed at providing mobile call, data, and instant messaging services that are comparable to those provided by major local telcos at considerable savings, SR1M starter packs are now available to consumers from as low as RM5.90.

In addition to a new number, the starter packs will come with RM5 worth of call credit and 150MB of mobile data.

SR1M users will be charged 8 sen per block for calls, 8 sen per SMS, and 5 sen per MB of cellular data.

“SR1M has been introduced not to add competition to the industry and the mobile phone network provider but as an alternative for those who need a mobile phone as a primary communications tool, among the lower income group as well as students,” said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hasan Malik, as quoted by Bernama

“SR1M’s rate will attract mobile phone users who want easy and free use without necessarily being tied with phone bills or hidden charges,” he added.

Despite its government-sanctioned name, the SR1M program is actually a private project with no federal funding or financial incentives. The SIM cards are being sold by Optic Tech Sdn Bhd, with a partnership with U-Mobile Sdn Bhd as its mobile network provider.

“SR1M coverage is extensive and it will be improved from time to time so that users can enjoy quality telecommunications services,” Hasan said.

Users can find out more about SR1M and the packages it offers at its official website
