French-born DJ, record label owner, and founder of his own online radio station, WorldwideFM, Gilles Peterson will make his emphatic return to Asia this February.
Best known for his eponymous weekly Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio 6 Music, Peterson has been pioneering new sounds and ideas in genres like acid jazz, hip-hop and electronica for decades. As a teen, Peterson would mix and record his own funk and soul radio show onto cassettes in his garden shed, then broadcast these mixes from a transmitter up a tree. He would go on to garner massive cult followings by spinning for pirate radio stations like Radio Invicta and Kiss FM. Peterson has also compiled numerous successful albums, and has enjoyed immense acclaim for his remixes of popular songs like Raphael Gualazzi’s ‘Reality & Fantasy’ and Chambao’s ‘Duende Del Sur’.
The recipient of countless awards, Peterson has also launched and hosted new international music festivals. He founded the Steve Reid Foundation in 2011, in memory of the legendary jazz drummer, which supports musicians who are ill and struggling with financial difficulties. Peterson also runs the Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award, which has supported rising artists like Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and Sarathy Korwar.
