A concert to raise money for those in need due to the COVID-19 pandemic will stream live online 11am to 4pm tomorrow.

The Derma Kilat Rakyat (National Flash Donation Drive, roughly) benefit concert seeks to raise RM3 million (US$710,000) for Malaysian nongovernmental organizations providing direct relief to those in need.

Organizers Projek Bangsa Malaysia said the “multi-hour fundraising livestream” features local icons such as musician Altimet, comedian Douglas Lim, actor Bront Palarae, activists, scholars and athletes. AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes and ex-CIMB Group Holdings chairman Nazir Razak were tapped to appear at the concert.

Projek Bangsa Malaysia promotes the idea of Malaysians collectively overcoming the struggle of the epidemic, economic hardships, and their “leaders” fighting each other rather than for their constituencies.

The benefit concert follows the video recently released by the organizer highlighting the cries of alleged frontliners which brought to light the situation of COVID-19 in Malaysia.

Multiple award-winning actor Bront Palarae was quoted saying: “I am just happy to be invited and be part of this initiative. We Malaysians are all in this together and hopefully, through this initiative, we are able to contribute & help our society in these trying times.”

The online concert will be streamed via Facebook. Donations can be made online.
