Malaysian TV show apologises over controversial Yuna-Usher parody

Popular Malaysian entertainment show ‘MeleTOP’ has issued an apology after its parody video drew massive flak online.

In the parody video, local comedian Shuk SYJ, who was in blackface make-up acting as R&B superstar Usher, was seen trying to hug fellow comedian Jihan Muse, who was playing Yuna.

The parody was a mockery of the live performance between Yuna and Usher last month which sparked a huge controversy after the Grammy Award-winner hugged the local singer at the end of their performance.

“We would like to sincerely apologize to Yuna & Usher for our recent parody video, which was poor judgement on our part.

“Rest assured that this does not reflect our values and beliefs. We have removed the video and would like to request everyone not to share it,” ‘MeleTOP’ said in a series of tweets last night.

On Thursday, the Malaysian singer took to her personal Facebook page to slam the parody video, saying that the video could jeopardise her career.

“Friends, I hope you know that the parody thing they did could end my whole career in the States. If Usher sees this person had done the ‘blackface’ thing, he would never ever want to associate himself with anything Malaysian ever again,” Yuna wrote on a Facebook posting.

“Stop sharing the video on Facebook. It’s not funny. It will only hurt me.”
