Sweet Spots: Best desserts in Kuala Lumpur

Coconuts Hot Spot columnist Chris Wan tracks back some of her favourite sweet dishes in this list of best desserts.

Tiramisu – Epicuro

Tiramisu

Tiramisu is commonly served in restaurants and cafes alike but the one that makes a deep impression on me is from Epicuro. It’s really one of the best and I adore its generous lashings of liquor melded with the mascarpone and moist sponge layers.

I’m not kidding when I say they don’t stinge on the alcohol – it’s one of the best tiramisu I’ve had in quite a while with a nice boozy kick.  It used to be served in individual glasses but now it’s served in cut squares. Same splendid tastes, just different shape.

I never fail to order this whenever I’m in Epicuro.

Chocolate Durian Cake – Bijan

Chocolate Durian Cake

When in Bijan, don’t ever skip their signature Chocolate Durian Cake, especially if you are a durian lover. It’s a divine combo of the most luscious chocolate and premium durian on a plate.

Only top grade durians are used and I could taste the premium bittersweet creamy pulp of D24 cocooned inside soft velvety dark chocolate layers – bliss

Malaikoh (Steamed Brown Sugar Sponge Cake) – Xin @ Concorde Kuala Lumpur

Xin Malaiko

A dimsum meal is never complete, at least for me, without having Malaikoh – a sweet steamed cake.  Literally translated, it means “malay cake”.  The brown hue of the soft fine-textured cake is from caramelized sugar which gives it that unmistakable rich almost-buttery aroma.  Crunchy melon seeds are scattered on the top for some contrast in colour and bite.

Bacon Ice Cream – The Smoking Hog

Bacon Ice Cream

The Bacon Ice Cream is something that must be tried at The Smoking Hog.  Two big scoops of house-made vanilla ice cream filled with bacon bits and topped with 2 slices of crispy candied bacon are pretty hard to resist.

This is something that has to be shared as the portion is generous.  Brace yourself for some real bacon loving here!

Madeleines – The Gallery TTDI

Madeleines

Few restaurants can make decent madeleines – those petite French sponge cakes. However, I recently discovered that The Gallery in TTDI makes some of the best madeleines here. They are freshly baked upon order, hence be prepared for a 30-minute wait for these. But they are definitely worth the wait, I tell you.

The delicately orange-perfumed French petite cakes are soft and fluffy inside with a nice crust on the outside. All they need is just a light dusting of icing sugar. This is a must-order at The Gallery.

Jamaican Bread & Banana Butter Pudding – Boathouse

Jamaican Pudding

If you love bread pudding, Boathouse’ version of Jamaican Bread and Banana Butter Pudding is to die for.  It’s a dream concoction of bread pudding layered with banana and raisins steeped in rum, soaked in a fresh egg custard and baked till a caramelized crust is formed.  It’s served piping hot, straight from the oven with vanilla ice cream.

This is baked according to order so please expect to wait about 25 minutes for this.  It’s certainly worth waiting for!

7.   Chendol – Oriental Cravings

Chendol

One of the best chendols I’ve had is found in a shopping mall.  There’s no need to sweat under the tree or by a dusty roadside.  Oriental Cravings in 1-Utama serves a mean chendol that’s quite irresistible.

The beauty is in the thick aromatic Gula Melaka used – something which is secretly sourced from Melaka and when mixed with the fragrant fresh coconut milk, that chendol is something not to be missed!

8.    Red Rubies – My Elephant

Red Rubies

Known as Tab Thim Krob in Thai, it is a staple dessert in most Thai restaurants but not many do it as well as My Elephant.

There are very generous portions of red rubies water chestnuts and thick strips of jackfruit in this version.  The rubies and jackfruit soaking in the thick creamy coconut milk makes this very addictive.  So whenever you are in My Elephant, remember to save some tummy space to indulge in this rich creamy dessert.
