Restaurant review: The sky high high-tea everyone is talking about in KL

High teas have always been a common feature in most hotels and it’s usually a laid-back buffet of local and western dishes. Have you ever tried High Tea in a Japanese restaurant?

Nobu Kuala Lumpur is the first Japanese restaurant to have introduced this unique style of high tea, available only on weekends.  Unlike the usual buffet spread, Nobu Kuala Lumpur’s take on “high tea” hinges on a totally different concept.

Located 56 floors above ground in one of the Twin Towers, Nobu’s high tea features a selection of savoury and sweet canapés and pastries, perfectly executed by Executive Chef Philip Leong and his team.  Available every weekend between 2.30pm to 5.00pm, the delectable bite-sized creations reflecting Nobu’s own unique spin on Japanese cuisine are proving to be immensely popular.

Ikura sushi cup
Mini salmon tartar
Mini shrimp sliders

While enjoying the spectacular skyscraper views all around from my window seat, I took my time savouring crunchy deep-fried seaweed rice crackers, mini shrimp sliders, seafood gyoza, mini salmon tartar and delicate ikura sushi cup from the savoury tray.

I liked how the chefs have incorporated little surprises in the items, like how the mini burgers of the shrimp sliders were actually made of tofu!

After downing more green tea, it was time to indulge on the sweet delicacies.

Banana Harumaki
Profiteroles
White Fish Tiradito

There were delicate servings of banana harumaki, green tea biscuits, dainty profiteroles filled with miso custard and of course, the indispensable Japanese sweet glutinous rice balls known as mochi which were bursting with gooey black goma and red bean paste filling.

Suntory Whisky Cappucino

What stood out for me was the mini Suntory Whisky Cappucino – a heavenly concoction of coffee crème brulè and coffee crumbles topped with Suntory whisky foam.  This was so good that I took a big gulp before realising I hadn’t taken a photo of it yet!

Avocado Smoothie
Strawberry Matcha

The High Tea set comes with a complimentary cup of green tea.  However, some of Nobu KL’s new matcha-themed drinks and specialty beverages were really irresistible.  Do check out their Coffee Cubes, Matcha Café Latte, Avocado Smoothie, Coffee Jelly and the very photogenic Strawberry Matcha!

The High Tea is priced at RM93++ per person, inclusive of a complimentary cup of green tea.
