No fancy decor, but full points for traditional Japanese meals at Fu-Rin

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Drive through the main gates of the Holiday Inn in Glenmarie and you can spot Fu-Rin Restaurant on the right. Just across, lies a huge carpark.

When you step into the restaurant, you may note that the fit-out is a bit dated and has a slight “old but comfortable” ambience.

Its furniture, carpet and lighting are simple and certainly won’t score top marks in any interior decor award. But one this is clear — people come here for the food; good old traditional Japanese fares.

We started off with bowls of Wakame Kyuuri Su — seaweed with Japanese cucumber soaked in a delightfully tangy dressing. Simple, yet refreshing.

We couldn’t resist having a pot of Dobin Mushi — double-boiled clear sweet seafood soup served in a pretty earthenware pot – what’s not to like about this nourishing broth?  It warmed both the tummy and the soul.

Fu-Rin’s Tempura Moriawase was flawless. The winning trait of any good tempura is a light crisp fine batter which would allow the fresh flavours of the meat or vegetables within to come through. Fu-Rin did a good rendition of this with its assorted tempura of prawns and vegetables.

What makes good sashimi then?  Undoubtedly, the freshness, as well as the cut of the fish and seafood.  If you can’t decide which type of fish to order, get the Sashimi Moriawase then.  The chef will choose the freshest that’s available for the day and put together a good combination.

At Fu-Rin, the Teppanyaki Wagyu Beef is a signature item. Order it to be cooked “medium” or “medium rare” for maximum enjoyment. The juicy, tasty beef practically melted in my mouth and those crunchy slivers of garlic were the perfect enhancer.

Garlic Fried Rice may seem like the most mundane dish but to execute it faultlessly requires crazy skills.

Sufficient heat is needed to produce that wok aroma, and each grain of rice tossed and covered well with the garlicky flavours. The chef is apparently an old hand at this, and we’d definitely order this bowl of comfort food again.
