Amid all the depressing news about religious intolerance in Indonesia in the past few years, this video of a musical collaboration between Catholic nuns and a qasidah (Islamic music) group will hopefully bring a smile to your face.
A clip from the video has been making the rounds on the internet in Indonesia after someone posted it to Twitter along with a link to the full video:
According to the Bishop’s Conference of Indonesia’s website, this inter-religious musical collaboration happened during the ninth anniversary celebration of Civita Youth Camp, a Catholic youth development institution, in South Tangerang’s Ciputat district on Wednesday.
Led by Cardinal Bishop Sister Yunita, the group sang together with the Miftahul Jannah Qasidah Group while other nuns are seen dancing in the background. In the video, they’re singing a qasidah song titled “Jilbab Putih” (“White Veil”), popularized by the legendary qasidah group Nasida Ria.
This performance adds to the list of examples of Muslim-Christian collaboration in Indonesia in recent years, including an Islamic choir group singing at a church’s Easter service and a Muslim woman singing a beautiful rendition of “Ave Maria” as a tribute to her late best friend. We’re so looking forward to seeing more collaborations like these in the future, because they truly epitomize Indonesia’s motto of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity).
