Weather agency warns of strong potential for heavy rains throughout Indonesia until June 25

Although rainy season ended quite a while ago, heavy rains have been battering parts of Indonesia recently, with strong downpours causing numerous deadly and devastating landslides throughout Central Java.

It looks like the unseasonally heavy rains aren’t done yet. Indonesia’s Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned that parts of the country could be hit by heavy rains over the next three days, until June 25.

“The area for potentially heavy rain is East Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, North Maluku and northern Papua,” BKKG Public Relations Head Hary T Djatmiko said in a statement received today by Tribunnews.

Those of us in Jakarta may have to deal with some severe downpours as well. The statement said that high humidity throughout most of the rest of Indonesia, including West Java, created the potential for rain cloud growth.

BMKG says that low pressure fronts coming in from the southwest near Lampung and from the waters north of Maluku would likely converge to create numerous storm systems.

The weather agency recommended that people in the affected areas of the country be prepared for heavy rains and possible flooding. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to bring an umbrella around with you over the next few days.
