Watch: Pretty big python pops up to freak out passengers on train to Jakarta

Many Indonesians rely on the country’s train system to get around – as do more than a few snakes, evidently. After a previous viral “snake on a train” incident in November, a train car full of passengers going to Jakarta yesterday were shocked by the sudden appearance of this great slithery beast.

While sleeping soundly on the economy train, suddenly a snake like this shows up … you’d definitely be upset too 🙂

The video was taken by a passenger on a train traveling from Surabaya to the Indonesia capital yesterday evening. In it you can see that the snake, identified by authorities as a reticulated python (which, like all pythons, is non-venomous) has already made its appearance, slithering up a seat while most of the passengers have fled to the opposite side of the train car until two brave souls, each going for one end of the animal, manage to secure it.

An official from Indonesia’s state-run train company, PT Kereta Api (KAI), confirmed the incident took place yesterday. They suspect the python was brought on by a passenger but they did not identify who. Nobody came forward to claim the reptile, which is classified as a protected species.

KAI spokesperson Agus Komarudin said that trains in Indonesia lacked X-ray scanners to detect this kind of illegal transport of animals, but said they were discussing adding them to stations as well as other measure to prevent wildlife smuggling aboard trains.

“While we do not have X-rays yet, we may yet in the future, but until then regulations at our stations will be tightened so that this sort of thing will not happen again. We also apologize to the passengers for the inconvenience,” Agus said as quoted by Detik.

In November, a snake also appeared on a train traveling from Bogor to Angke. Dramatic video of the incident showed one man fearlessly pull the struggling serpent from out of the overhead compartment and, with one mighty swing, smashed its head on the floor, killing it instantly.
