Yesterday afternoon Bandung experienced heavy rain all day culminating in the overflow of the Citepus River leading to massive flash flooding which covered the streets of the West Java capital with waters up to 2 meters high in some areas.
The flood currents were strong enough to pull vehicles up off the street, as shown in this video:
At least one person is also dead after being caught in the floodwaters – a convenience store employee who got swept away while trying to help a woman.
Approximately four thousand houses in the area were damaged and layers of mud remain throughout the city.
“Things are already starting to get back to normal, with vehicles again able to pass in the areas that were most severely flooded yesterday such as Pasteur and Pagarsih. But the mud is still piled high, up to 10-15 meters at some points,” Haryadi, the head of the West Java Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) told BBC Indonesia.
