Indonesians are no strangers to out-of-the-box fusion foods, but a dish combining cross-species cuisines has gone viral lately and we’re equal parts repulsed and intrigued by the concept.

This week, a nasi goreng (fried rice) cooking tutorial video, originally posted on Instagram in 2017, has gone hugely viral in Twitter. The video, created by an Indonesian chef named Bahtiar Sigar, was posted as part of his #MasakDarurat (#EmergencyCooking) series.

Take a look and decide if you would eat this — if you were stuck on a deserted island and it was this or starvation:

On the original Instagram post, which has since been deleted, Bahtiar said he got the inspiration to explore the possibilities of feline cuisine when he fed his cat.

“As soon as I opened the cat food packaging, the smell made me hungry,” Bahtiar wrote (note: we don’t know about you, but the smell of wet cat food usually makes us nauseous).

Bahtiar added that the cat food actually gave off a “pretty amazing smell” as he sauteed the nasi goreng.

Then he ate it.

“The taste is not that bad, pretty much like fish sausage,” he said.

Anticipating questions about whether his unique nasi goreng was safe for human consumption, Bahtiar mentioned an article in which a dietitian said cat food contains “nothing too horrible, but in general, these things don’t constitute a healthy human diet”.

Just out of curiosity, we checked on cat food producers Whiskas’ website, and they say the ingredients in their products are naturally harvested and suitable for human consumption.”

No matter how safe it is, the thought of consuming cat food is enough to make us ill. Also, it’s actually very possible for cat food to be contaminated with harmful bacteria like salmonella and listeria.

Indonesian netizens are pretty divided on Bahtiar’s cat food nasi goreng.

“So is this the literal nasi kucing?” (Nasi Kucing is a popular dish from Yogyakarta consisting of small servings of rice, not literally cat meat on rice.)

One suggested doing a cooking tutorial using fish pellets.

Feel free to try this recipe at your own risk, but we would urge you to give the results to your cat instead. Think of it as a gourmet treat for good behavior.
