Surabaya, capital of the East Java province and Indonesia’s second largest city, was the scene of some unusual and extreme weather yesterday that claimed a life and caused significant property damage.

Thunderstorms and hail fell on parts of Surabaya and its sister city, Sidoarjo, for much of yesterday afternoon. A 20-year-old woman identified as Nur Sri Ayu was killed after she and her friend sought shelter on Jalan Tehnik Hidro during the storm in Surabaya. Sadly, the two plunged into a sewage canal as they avoided a collapsing tree, killing Nur and injuring her friend.

Elsewhere, a wall collapsed in the Gayungan district during the storm and crushed a parked white car with three people on board. The three were eventually rescued but suffered serious injuries.

There were many reports of trees collapsing from strong winds throughout the city, but there were no reports of people getting hurt directly by hail.

Hail is rare in tropical Indonesia. Most recently, the West Java capital of Bandung saw stormy weather and hail on Monday, while Jakarta also experienced hail in 2014, though without an accompanying thunderstorm.
