A woman tried to jump from the 20th floor of the Wisma Atlet COVID-19 quarantine facility in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta yesterday, with the suicide attempt foiled by two soldiers on duty.

The woman, identified as a 50-year-old domestic worker with the initials EK, reportedly tried to jump out of the window of her room on the 20th floor on Tuesday evening.

One video taken from a building across from hers showed that EK was already standing on the narrow ledge outside the window when two soldiers from the Air Force were called to the scene to stop her from jumping and pulled her back in.

It reportedly took around 10 minutes for the soldiers to convince EK not to jump and for them to eventually pull her.

Staff at the facility then calmed EK and treated her for exhaustion. EK told the attending staff that she tried to commit suicide because she was depressed that she had been unable to see her family and children while under quarantine at Wisma Atlet.

Indonesia currently does not have a dedicated government-run suicide prevention hotline, but if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression and/or contemplating suicide, you can get more information and resources from several local NGOs dealing with mental health and suicide prevention, such as intothelightid.org.
