Small boy reportedly gets arm stuck in escalator in Pacific Place mall

A small boy, who was reported to be 3-years-old by some media outlets, reportedly got his arm stuck in an escalator in Pacific Mall in SCBD, South Jakarta.

Pendy, a witness, told Merdeka that the incident occurred around 4:15 pm yesterday.

“I was going up at the time, and that’s when I saw a crowd of people and a little child screaming and crying,” he said.

“I thought the escalator’s landing platform had collapsed, like [a video] in Youtube. It turned out that a boy got stuck.”

Pendy said that the boy had been holding onto the moving handrail until the end of the escalator and got his arm stuck when the handrail moved down and back inside.

He said it took around 30 minutes for technicians and security officers to get the boy away from the escalator.

“[The escalator] was dismantled. I don’t know [if the arm was amputated], but I saw that there was so much blood,” he said.

The boy was reportedly taken to the Pertamina Central Hospital (RSPP) for treatment. The Jakarta Metro Police said they were going to carry out an investigation into the incident.

The escalator was closed and the mall management put up an under maintenance sign after the incident. The management have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
