Onboard Wi-Fi isn’t a new concept, but it’s still a luxury not many Indonesian airlines provide. But now Indonesian budget airline Sriwijaya Air is set to become one among the very few that do — for free (well, its cost is probably worked into the ticket fare).

According to Sriwijaya Air’s president director Joseph Adriaan Saul, free Wi-Fi will be available on the airline’s flights soon, but not before Citilink and Garuda Indonesia provide free Wi-Fi on their flights as well.

“We will install the Wi-Fi after Citilink installs the technology on all their aircrafts, hopefully it’ll be done by this year,” Joseph told Kumparan today.

On November 2018, PT Garuda Indonesia, through its budget airline subsidiary PT Citilink Indonesia, took over Sriwijaya Air’s financial and operational management, along with its sister airline NAM Air.

Citilink began rolling out its free Wi-Fi service since late last December. The airline aims to equip 20 aircrafts with Wi-Fi before the end of this year and will add more in 2020

Garuda Indonesia will also start rolling out free Wi-Fi for all passengers from March of this year. The country’s flag carrier has already been providing onboard Wi-Fi, although only first class passengers get internet access for free.

Before the free Wi-Fi is provided, Sriwijaya Air passengers can enjoy films and music for free through the airline’s AirFi app starting from the end of January.
