Jakarta’s Kota Tua is set to become a low emission zone (LEZ) starting next week, the capital’s Transportation Agency announced today, thus prohibiting all private vehicles from cruising through the popular heritage site.
“Private vehicles, freight transport, and non-TransJakarta public transport are not allowed to go through the road within the LEZ, with exceptions that have been set,” Jakarta Transportation Agency Chief Syafrin Liputo said in a statement.
The new policy will be enforced this coming Monday. Instead of using their own cars or motorbikes, visitors as well as workers whose offices are located within the Kota Tua area are encouraged to make use of available public transport options, such as the Commuter Line and TransJakarta buses. In addition, visitors also have the option to ride their bicycles.
Traffic jams are a relatively common sight in this bustling tourist site (pre-pandemic, anyways), which is popular among new visitors as well as local residents. With the new policy in place and officials having set a new traffic flow, those driving into the area are expected to follow directions from officers.
Syafrin also explained that exceptions are in place for vehicles that “have passed emissions tests [and] bear stickers for specific vehicles which cannot be replaced with other types of vehicles.”
