Police confiscate unlicensed booze and firecrackers in pre-Ramadan raid in Tanah Abang

Ramadan is no more than a week away. As Muslims all over the city are preparing themselves spiritually and mentally, law enforcement has also been taking its annual steps to ensure that the holy fasting month will be a peaceful time. That includes ridding the city of things that may disrupt Islamic worship during Ramadan, like booze and firecrackers.

Yesterday evening, the Tanah Abang Police carried out a raid in which they confiscated hundreds of bottles of booze and thousands of firecrackers being sold illegally on the streets of the district.

“From this operation we confiscated 12 crates of white beer (pilsner) totaling 144 bottles. From some warungs we confiscated 327 booze bottles, which included Anggur Orang Tua, black beer, Angker, red wine,” said Commissioner Mustakim, head of the Crime Investigation Unit at the Tanah Abang Police, as quoted by Okezone today.

“We also found 18 bundles of firecrackers totaling 180 thousand pieces but we don’t know who was selling them because they ran away,” he added.

Mustakim said that alcohol and firecrackers may become gateways to gang brawls, as was seen in previous Ramadans.

“Booze and firecrackers can lead to criminal activities like brawls. These things can disrupt those who are performing acts of worship during Ramadan,” he said.
