Police arrest UberMOTO driver accused of sexually assaulting 14-year-old in West Jakarta

The West Jakarta Police yesterday arrested a motorcycle taxi driver who was accused of raping a 14-year-old girl, identified by her initials DA.

According to police, the driver, identified as 23 year-old Arvendy, works for Uber’s newly launched motorcycle taxi service UberMOTO. Authorities say he recently lured DA into a hotel in the Taman Sari district of West Jakarta and sexually assaulted her there.

While the police did not reveal how and when Arvendy was arrested, they have confirmed that he is now in the custody of the West Jakarta Police. The police are currently interviewing witnesses before they can officially name him a suspect.

“He’s still accused. We’re still investigating his motive and collecting evidence,” said West Jakarta Police Spokesman Commissioner Herru Julianto, as quoted by Okezone today.

A medical examination is currently being carried out on DA at Kramat Jati Police Hospital.

Just last week, the government introduced the death penalty and chemical castration as possible punishments for child molesters as a deterrent to prevent sexual abuse against children. However, since then there have been several horrifying cases of sexual violence against children being reported in the capital, such as one involving 8 men gang raping a 14 year-old girl this past weekend, also in West Jakarta.
