A 30-year-old man in the East Java capital of Surabaya was arrested yesterday by the police after numerous women reported that he had grabbed their butts at the market where he worked as a parking attendant.
“After they parked, he would follow the victim. When there was a chance, the suspect squeezed and touched one of the victim’s body parts [the butt]. After that the suspect ran away,” Surabaya Police spokesperson Rety Suasmaningsih told reporters today as quoted by Detik.
Rety said there were around 10 women who reported the man, identified by police as Deny, for the same kind of sexual harassment, including one underage girl. Rety said there could be many more victims who did not report Deny’s actions.
When asked what his motivation was for the multiple butt-grabbing incidents, Rety said that the suspect told investigators that he simply acted on his desire when he saw women he liked.
Rety said the police believed that Deny had been grabbing butts since the beginning of September and he has been charged with violating Indonesia’s child protection laws for sexual abuse of an underage victim, a crime which carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in jail. There was no mention of whether he would also be charged with any crimes related to his alleged adult victims.
