Ever since last month, the above footage of a nude burglar in Menteng (who supposedly thought he could become invisible by taking off his clothes because, well, black magic) has been making the rounds on social media. But even we started to believe that maybe he could really become invisible given that there has never been any news about his arrest.
But it turns out there’s no hocus pocus here – the police finally arrested the naked burglar and one of his accomplices recently while the suspects were partying at a nightclub in Lokasari, West Jakarta, using stolen money.
The nude burglar was identified by the initials HW. The police said he broke into houses in Menteng with the help of an accomplice, ZT, who, thankfully, always remained clothed.
“Their act was funny. First they’d jump into a house from the house next door, and then CCTV cameras from one of the houses filmed HW naked [while burglarizing the house],” said Commissioner Tahan Marpaung, head of the Crime Investigation Unit at the Central Jakarta Police, as quoted by Detik yesterday.
“He (HW) said the reason [for going nude] was so that he didn’t make noise. There were mantras spoken [during the burglary].”
Well, it appears HW wasn’t attempting an invisibility spell after all. No wonder he got caught on camera and eventually by the police. The wrong mantra was uttered, we think.
HW and ZT broke into six houses in Menteng since February of this year, stealing money and valuables like mobile phones and jewelry. One of those houses belongs to former Justice and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsudin, from which HW and ZT stole USD 1,500 in cash and a mobile phone.
The two sold the stolen valuables on the black market through three accomplices, who have been identified by the police and are now being searched for.
