Police arrest man suspected of murdering younger sister over inheritance money

On Tuesday, 22-year-old Murniati, an architecture student at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ), was found dead in her home in Cipayung, East Jakarta.

Murniati’s death is attracting quite a lot of media coverage locally, mainly because her brother, who is identified by his initials AR (31), has been named as the sole suspect in her murder.

When Murniati’s body was first found early Tuesday morning, there were reportedly numerous bruises on her head, leading authorities to believe that her death was a homicide. Later, autopsy results indicated that she had indeed been murdered.

Less than 24 hours after the discovery of Murniaty’s body, the police arrested her brother AR and named him as the sole suspect in his sister’s murder. The police believes that the alleged murder could have be financially motivated.

“What’s clear is that the suspect is a relative of the victim. As for whether or not the motive was over their family’s inheritance money, the investigators are still looking into it,” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Argo Yuwono, as quoted by Detik yesterday.

There is reason to believe that AR planned the murder sometime beforehand. When questioned as witnesses, other family members said that a spare key to the house went missing the last time AR went to visit the house. Police speculate that AR could have used that key to enter the house when Murniati was alone and killed her.

It’s not yet known what charges AR will face.
