Police arrest con artist who allegedly tricked 50 flight attendants into thinking he was a pilot for dates and money

If you’re a pilot, you can get away with quite a lot in Indonesia (like having security guards help you get to your plane when you’re obviously drunk, for example). And even if you’re not a pilot, as long as people think you are, then the sky is (almost) the limit.

The Kelapa Dua Precinct in Tangerang say they have arrested a man, identified by his initials RR, who allegedly tricked 50 air hostesses into believing that he was an airline pilot so that he could date them. Not only that, RR allegedly established so much trust with his victims that he got them to give him a substantial amount of money.

“The suspect tells [his victims] that he’s off duty. He’d tell them he wants to meet up but he needs to borrow money first. But after receiving the money, the suspect would disappear, change his name and his phone number,” said Kelapa Dua Police Chief Commissioner Zainal Ashab, as quoted by Merdeka yesterday.

The police released photos of the suspect, along with his several aliases.

Zainal said that RR’s victims each wired around Rp 1-5 million to him, putting the total money earned from his scheme at around Rp 150-200 million.

Many of RR’s victims are air hostesses working for various airlines based in Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The police have yet to question the victims as witnesses.

It’s not yet known what charges RR will face for his actions.
