‘Pak, it’s better that I be shot dead’: Police say suspect in horrific Pulomas killings wants death penalty

On December 26, 2016, a horrific multiple homicide case shocked Indonesia after six people were found dead in an upscale house in Pulomas, East Jakarta.

Authorities believe that the six victims died from suffocation after a gang of robbers locked them in a tiny bathroom for 17 hours along with five other people who managed to survive the ordeal.

By Sunday, the police arrested the last of the four suspects, identified by the initials RS, in Medan, North Sumatra. They had previously arrested two other suspects, ES and AS, while the alleged leader of the group, RBB, died after getting shot in the leg while supposedly resisting arrest.

The police say that the suspects have performed numerous robberies before but have never murdered anyone they robbed in the past. They say suspect ES, in particular, showed regret that people died as a result of their crime.

“The suspect (ES) even said, ‘Pak, it’s better that I be shot dead,’” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Argo Yuwono, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.

Another suspect, RS, was only released from a prison in Tangerang a month before committing robberies in Jonggol, Purwakarta, and eventually Pulomas along with the other three suspects. Police say the gang often locked up their victims in a room while they ransacked the house for valuable items.

It’s not yet known what charges the three remaining suspects will face for their alleged crimes.

The owner of the house, DT, died along with his two young children, their friend who was at the house at the time of the robbery, and two drivers. DT’s 13-year-old daughter survived as well as four domestic helpers. The survivors are reportedly recovering well physically, but the young girl is refusing to return to the house after the traumatic experience.
