One reported dead in Hotel Grand Paragon karaoke room fire

Fire engulfed the sixth floor of Hotel Grand Paragon in Jalan Gajah Mada, West Jakarta this morning, reportedly claiming the life of one victim.

The fire reportedly erupted at around 9:30 am today, with officials stating that an electrical failure was the cause of the fire.

“The fire was the result of an electrical short circuit in a karaoke room,” said Hardisiswan, head of West Jakarta’s Fire Department, as quoted by Okezone.

Over 30 fire trucks were deployed to put out the fire. Images of thick smoke coming out of the hotel’s sixth floor have been circulating on social media.

According to Detik, one unidentified person, who was on the sixth floor of the hotel at the time of the fire, died this morning. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the person’s death was a direct result of the fire.

Authorities had to partially shut the road running adjacent to the hotel, causing traffic jams in the area.

Hotel Grand Paragon was threatened with closure in early 2016 by the Jakarta Provincial Government after the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) found 50 drug users, some of them civil servants, in the hotel during a drug raid.
