The man who jumped from his apartment unit in Setiabudi, South Jakarta yesterday took his own life because of financial difficulties, authorities said.

The neighborhood was rocked when the victim’s leg fell from the sky on a busy alley behind Ambasador Mall yesterday afternoon, which is filled with food hawkers. Police said that the body part belonged to a tenant, identified as 27-year-old A, who jumped from his apartment on the 23rd floor in an apparent suicide. His leg came off when his body came into contact with the balcony of a sixth floor apartment and fell on the alley.

Witnesses initially speculated that the leg came from a mutilated murder victim.

Setiabudi Police Chief Yogen Heroes Baruno said that it was strongly suspected that A committed suicide after losing money from his stock trading investments, according to a statement from his family.

“His family said that he had been quiet lately, there may be financial problems because he fell victim to stock trading. We’re still looking into the motive for his suicide, but it could be because of financial issues,” Yogen said yesterday

Yogen added that police didn’t find any suspicious signs or evidence of foul play in the 23rd floor apartment, which reportedly belongs to his aunt. A’s body was taken to the National Police Hospital in East Jakarta for further examination.

Indonesia currently does not have a dedicated government-run suicide prevention hotline, but if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression and/or contemplating suicide, you can get more information and resources from several local NGOs dealing with mental health and suicide prevention, such as intothelightid.org.
