Police in North Jakarta have arrested a man accused of exploiting an 11-year-old girl for sex work.

Police say the suspect, 27-year-old DF, was arrested at his apartment in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. He allegedly promoted the young sex trafficking victim to clients through MiChat — a direct messaging platform associated with sex work in Indonesia.

On the platform, DF promoted the victim as a 16-year-old and charged IDR450K (US$30.87) for her services, with most of the money going to him.

“The account was operated by the perpetrator. The victim did not operate it at all,” North Jakarta Police Chief Guruh Arif Dermawan said today.

DF confessed to having the victim serve one client, though police are still investigating if she may have been exploited to serve more.

Police say DF managed to convince the victim, who hails from out of town, to come to the capital with the promise that he would find her a job.

“[He convinced her] through various means, like for economic reasons, promises for a job, allowance, and more. [The victim] is still in fifth grade,” Kelapa Gading Police Crime Investigation Unit Chief Muhammad Fajar said.

DF was charged with sex trafficking of a minor, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
