Kartini Day surprise: TransJakarta launches female only bus to counter sexual harassment

Indonesian women have experienced all sorts of sexual harassment on public transportation, which is why state-owned bus company TransJakarta last year began planning to segregate men and women on their buses.

Today, in honor of Kartini Day, TransJakarta is finally launching their female-only bus fleet.

“The launch is happening in the front lawn of City Hall,” said TransJakarta Spokesperson Prasetia Budi, as quoted by Tempo today.

Two female-only buses will drive out from City Hall into the road to symbolize the launch, but it’s not clear at this point how many buses are going to be designated for the female-only fleet.

Of course, regular TransJakarta buses already segregate passengers by giving women exclusive access to the front of the bus. In addition, the KRL Commuterline also has two female-only carriages to each train.

Is segregation the right solution for combating sexual harassment against women? Or do our public transport providers have the wrong idea?
