Police in East Jakarta are investigating an incident that shocked the city, which saw the body of a dead infant being handed over to an unsuspecting citizen.

According to the police, on Friday, a woman, who is identified by her initials FL, was driving her motorcycle when she stopped under a tunnel on Jalan Raya Hankam in Cipayung. Then, two strangers on a motorcycle drove up next to her and handed her a shoe box.

The strangers told FL that the box contained shoes before driving away. When FL opened the box, she was horrified to find that it actually contained a deceased infant boy.

FL took the box to the local police, who are carrying out an autopsy on the boy to determine his cause of death. The results of the autopsy have not yet been released.

“We have questioned three witnesses and reviewed CCTV footage from the location,” East Jakarta Police Deputy Chief Stefanus Tamuntuan said yesterday.

Local media outlets reported that FL was handed the dead baby as part of a morbid prank, but Stefanus dismissed the reports saying that the culprits have not yet been apprehended thus their motive has not been established.

“We’re at a loss as to why [this is being reported as a] prank. We’re still investigating, he said.
