Earlier this month, 27-year-old Wayan Mirna Salimin died after drinking coffee at Olivier Café in Grand Indonesia mall. The police then found the coffee to have been contaminated with cyanide, leading them to believe that Mirna’s death was a homicide.
However, the Jakarta Metro Police have not yet named a suspect in the murder case that has become the talk of the capital. To further their investigation, they have sought the help of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to uncover Mirna’s past in Australia, where she spent her college years.
The police believe that it’s necessary to gain an insight into Mirna’s social life while she studied in Australia to understand the dynamics of her relationship with any potential suspects.
“We have already contacted them (AFP),” said Grand Commissioner Krishna Murti, director of the General Crimes Investigation Unit for the Jakarta Metro Police, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.
Krishna added that the AFP are going to assist in the investigation by questioning Mirna’s friends in Australia.
Mirna, along with her friend Jessica Wongso, studied at Billy Blue College of Design in Sydney. The pair graduated together in 2008.
According to the Jakarta Police, Mirna sat at the same table as Jessica and another friend, Hani, when she drank the cyanide-tainted coffee in the afternoon of January 6th.
Jessica reportedly arrived at the café first and ordered drinks for Mirna and Hani some time before they arrived.
It’s not clear who poisoned Mirna’s drink as the view to their table was obstructed in the café’s CCTV footage.
Mirna went into seizures after taking a sip of the coffee and passed away upon arrival at Abdi Waluyo Hospital.
After Mirna’s death, Jessica dodged police questioning on one occasion before eventually agreeing to be investigated as a witness by the police.
Apart from Jessica, the police also questioned several other witnesses, including the café’s management and staff.
