Although pornography is strictly illegal in Indonesia, it was once relatively easy to find pornographic DVDs being sold under the table at some of Jakarta’s shadier shopping centers. But while faster internet speeds and VPNs may have made demand for the illicit adult discs dwindle, there is still apparently a market in the capital for those willing to spend good money on buying huge volumes of pornography.

At least, that seems to be the case in light of the police’s arrest of a man in North Jakarta who they say was selling portable hard drivers loaded up with porno for an impressive profit.

According to the head of the Tanjung Priok Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Faruk Rozi, the suspect, who was arrested on Jalan Sunter Paradise on Saturday, was selling the hard drives for IDR2 million (US$140) each.

“He got a profit of IDR1,000,000 from the proceeds of each sale,” Faruk said on Wednesday as quoted by Kompas, adding that the drives contained 1,500 pornographic videos.

Most portable hard drives costing IDR1 million hold 2 TB, which is enough to hold 1,000 hours worth of HD video.

Police say the suspect was a former seller of pirated DVDs and VCDs in Glodok, West Jakarta. Authorities did not specify how many of the hard drives he’d sold, but said he would be charged with violating several statutes of the 2008 Pornography bill, meaning he could face up to 12 years if convicted.
