Jakarta planetarium giving away 4,700 eclipse glasses on a first come, first served basis

You should all hopefully have learned in school to never look at a solar eclipse directly with your bare eyes. Casual observers often use pinhole projectors or eclipse glasses to view this rare alignment of the Earth, sun, and moon.

If you haven’t bought eclipse glasses in anticipation of tomorrow’s near total eclipse in Jakarta (forget pinhole projectors – they’re really lame), don’t worry, you will be able to get a pair for free at the Jakarta planetarium in Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) – provided you get there super early.

“People just have to come at 4:30am and get in line [for the glasses]. Next, they can view the eclipse from TIM’s front parking lot and behind Theater Jakarta,” said Eko Wahyu Wibowo, head of TIM’s planetarium and observatory, as quoted by Warta Kota.

Eko added that the planetarium is giving away 4,700 eclipse glasses on a first come, first served basis. In addition, they will also provide 8 telescopes for visitors, so good luck sharing them among the hundreds, if not thousands, of eclipse observers that will be at TIM tomorrow.

If you think going to TIM so early in the morning is way too big a hassle, you might still want to check out the exact times you’ll be able to watch tomorrow’s solar eclipse from anywhere in Jakarta.
