Let’s see if Jokowi’s concert in Monas today draws a bigger crowd than this election rally in July
After a tough election battle, post-election drama and pre-inauguration political maneuvering, President-elect Joko Widodo finally gets a day to just celebrate how far he has come – from growing up in the slums of Solo all the way to leading Indonesia from the State Palace.
Today’s events will start at 10am with the official inauguration ceremony for Jokowi and his Vice President, Jusuf Kalla at the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) complex in Senayan. The ceremony should take about an hour.
Around noon, Jokowi and JK will board a carriage to head up a parade in their honor, which will start at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout and follow Thamrin up to the State Palace. As we reported previously, food and drink vendors will be handing out hundreds of thousands of freebies to Jokowi’s hungry supporters.
Once their carriage reaches the State Palace, Jokowi and JK will be welcomed by outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The plan is to make the welcoming ceremony an open house event with 7,000 members of the public allowed to enter.
The last stop on Jokowi’s inauguration agenda is the National Monument (Monas), where the new president is scheduled to arrive around 5pm to join his supporters for a concert featuring some of Indonesia’s top bands, including Nidji, Syahrini and, of course, Slank. The concert is actually going all day – here’s a schedule of all the acts that’s been going around Twitter
So you can get to Monas early if you like to ensure a good spot for Slank around 9:30, as it is rumored Jokowi may join them for a song as he did during the concert in his honor back in July. The final Instagrammable moment of the day will be the release of 7,000 lanterns into the sky.
