A viral video purportedly showing Indonesians misbehaving in Japan has attracted widespread ridicule, but even the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tokyo is still unsure of the clip’s authenticity.

The CCTV footage, which was uploaded by TikTok user @e9_ash three days ago, shows a group of passengers rushing past a ticket gate together at what is said to be a Shinkansen station. Essentially, the group managed to cheat the system and boarded the train with just one ticket.

Not much context was given to the clip, other than a caption that reads, “Eight Indonesians were deported to Indonesia after they were caught cheating the Shinkansen ticketing [system].”

@e9_ash Hemm lebih hati" pai,yang udah bossen di jepang,dan pengen cepet" pulang indo, bisa ikuti cara seperti di vidio ini😁#2023 #nembakshinkansen #sinkansenjapan🚄 #sinkansen🚅 #dipulangkan #indonesia #jepang #fouryou #kensusei🇮🇩🇯🇵 ♬ suara asli – Ash

The uploader has subsequently posted new videos claiming that Indonesians in Japan have been under increased scrutiny by Japanese rail authorities in light of the incident.

Though the authenticity of the clip has not been verified, the KBRI in Tokyo nonetheless issued a statement on Wednesday.

“The KBRI in Tokyo implores all Indonesian nationals in Japan to obey the rules and codes of conduct that apply here,” Meinarti Fauzie, a spokeswoman for the embassy, said as quoted by the news agency Antara.

The embassy is looking into whether or not the incident happened and whether or not eight Indonesians were deported recently as a result.

There are some doubts online as to the claims made in the video, particularly regarding the nationalities of the eight people who cheated the ticket gate. Netizens have also pointed out that the station in the video serves commuter trains, not the Shinkansen.
