Indonesian Ulema Council criticizes #NoBraDay, says women not wearing bras have “morals of animals”

Yesterday was International No Bra Day, which is celebrated annually on October 13 and encourages women to go bra-less for a day with the aim of spreading awareness about the importance of breast screening, recognizing the symptoms of breast cancer and encouraging regular self-examinations in the fight against breast cancer.

No Bra Day has caught on in Indonesia too, with the hashtag #NoBraDay trending in the Indonesian Twittersphere yesterday. But some people may have gotten the wrong idea about the day’s meaning due to irresponsible tweets that used the hashtag on pictures of naked breasts and straight-up pornography.

Unsurprisingly, one of the groups who completely got the the wrong idea about the meaning of No Bra Day was the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), with one of its representatives declaring his moral outrage for the event by saying that seeing women wearing tight clothing without a bra underneath in public could cause men to get aroused.

“Astaghfirullah, we hope that the people of Indonesia aren’t following the trend,” said MUI vice secretary general Muhammad Zaitun Rasmin, as quoted by Jawa Pos yesterday.

He said the trend was created by cultures that are weak on religious values.

“Clerics must make people realize that the act [of not wearing a bra] constitutes animalistic morals,” he said.
