Indonesians seem to love calling out other Indonesians on committing faux pas abroad. Especially in Japan, where what is considered normal (but not necessarily right) in Indonesia is considered an unforgivable offense, like littering.

Yesterday, an Indonesian TikTok user who goes by the handle @hassanhans posted a video that has gone hugely viral. The video, taken in Kyoto, shows litter collected in one corner of an otherwise pristine clean street.

Bringing his camera close to the mess, @hassansans showed that the litter consisted of a flour-coated peanut snack and a few hot sauce packets — both of which are Indonesian products — along with some discarded paper napkins. The TikTok user expressed his embarrassment at the sight, implying his suspicion that Indonesians were responsible.

The post has been viewed 1.6 million times at the time of writing.

Of course, viral posts like this have to be taken with a grain of flour-coated peanut salt. While many online have similarly expressed embarrassment on behalf of all Indonesians, some have pointed out that there is no way to ascertain without doubt that Indonesians were responsible for the litter in the video.

But it certainly wouldn’t be the first viral incident of Indonesians allegedly misbehaving in Japan…
