A 31-year-old man, identified by his initial R, reportedly attacked the Penjaringan Police Station in North Jakarta early this morning in what the police have described as a suicide-by-cop attempt.

As reported by Detik, the police said R wielded a machete when he entered the police station hoping that somebody would shoot him dead as he could no longer bear his suffering from an unspecified illness.

“He wanted to commit suicide, but he was afraid to do it. So then he attacked the police hoping to be shot dead,” Penjaringan Police Chief Rachmat Sumekar said today.

“He even ignored unarmed police officers. He was looking [to attack] armed officers.”

R was eventually shot in the arm and subdued by officers at the station. One officer reportedly sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The Densus 88 Antiterrorism Squad is currently investigating possible terrorist links to R’s attacks due to previous terror attacks against police stations this year. The police say R shouted Allahu Akbar before he attacked the station but they believe he did so to get a surge of adrenaline going.

The Penjaringan Police have made R a criminal suspect, but they have not revealed what charges were made against him.

If you or anybody you know is having suicidal thoughts and urgently needs to talk to somebody, you can call 119 to reach the Ministry of Health’s mental health hotline.
