A man from Bengkulu city was arrested for a gruesome act of vengeance against his niece’s alleged rapist, local police said, in a case that also saw the latter arrested.

According to reports, 16-year-old RZ allegedly raped his then-girlfriend, who is also underage, in early March. The victim’s uncle, 35-year-old MU, learned about the rape not long after.

“He was angry that his niece was sexually assaulted, so MU called RZ and then cut off his genitalia with a utility knife,” Bengkulu Police spokesman Sudarno said today.

RZ reported MU to the police in March, with the latter confessing to castrating the former. MU is now on trial for aggravated assault.

However, police investigation into the case also ruled that RZ sexually assaulted MU’s niece in accordance with Indonesia’s Child Protection Law. The teenager was formally charged this week, meaning he could face up to 15 years in prison for the sexual assault of a minor.

“But because the suspect is a minor, his prison sentence will be reduced by a third,” Sudarno said.

In 2016, after the brutal gang rape and murder of a teenage girl in Bengkulu, President Joko Widodo signed a Perppu (Presidential Regulation In Lieu of Law) introducing the death penalty and chemical castration for convicted child molesters. Activists say that the threat of severe punishment has not been as successful a deterrent as the government hoped, as sexual assault against children continue to be a serious problem in Indonesia.
