Hospital in Menteng closed after numerous health code violations and attempts to bribe officials

It’s no secret that many Indonesians who can afford it go to get their medical treatment abroad in Singapore. It’s not that Indonesia doesn’t have plenty of good doctors, but who can blame anybody for seeking healthcare overseas when there are so many horror stories about hospitals here engaging in corrupt and dangerous practices (e.g. purchasing fake vaccines)?

Hospitals in Indonesia are required to meet certain licensing standards, but even that process is open to the possibility of corruption, as shown in the case of Menteng Mitra Afia Hospital, which was now been officially been shut down by the government.

According to officials, the hospital was closed after its management repeatedly failed to meet licensing standards.

Confirming the news, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said, “The hospital was already given three warnings. They also bribed our people,” as quoted by Merdeka.

Ahok said the closure was done to protect the citizens of Jakarta. He said it would also set an example to other hospitals that do not follow regulations. Although he did not go into details about what violations the hospital had committed, he did say that they potentially endangered the health of patients.
