Health Agency raids orthopedic clinic found illegally employing foreign medical staff

Authorities have increased efforts to uncover unlicensed foreign medical professionals working in Indonesia recently after news broke last week about an unlicensed American chiropractor who was suspected of committing malpractice that led to the death of his patient in Pondok Indah last year.

On Saturday, the Jakarta Health Agency and the Health Ministry raided Medika Plaza orthopedic clinic in Hotel Kartika Chandra, South Jakarta, after receiving reports that the clinic employed foreign medical professionals.

“Yesterday, I received a report from a citizen that there are foreign doctors working here, even when their permit states they can’t hire foreign doctors,” said Jakarta Health Agency head Koesmedi Priharto during the raid, as quoted by BeritaSatu.

The officers took four foreign medical professionals from the clinic into custody before handing them over to immigration officials. They also seized medical prescriptions signed by foreign doctors by the names of Wong Chung Chek and Lee Yu Guen as evidence.

Koesmedi added that the Jakarta provincial government will hand down severe sanctions to the clinic for breaking the law.
