Go-Jek drivers protest new incentive scheme, cause traffic jam in Kemang

While many see ojek motorcycle taxis as the best option for beating the capital’s infamous gridlock, drivers from one ojek company were the ironic cause of a traffic jam today.

Hundreds of Go-Jek’s partner drivers are reportedly conducting a demonstration on the street outside the company’s headquarters in Kemang, South Jakarta. The drivers are protesting a new incentive scheme from Go-Jek that supposedly hurts the drivers’ chances of receiving a daily bonus if users cancel their order.

“There are many fictitious orders (users who order and cancel right away), making it hard for us to get bonuses,” said Adi, a Go-Jek driver, as quoted by Warta Kota.

Adi explained that Go-Jek drivers are entitled to bonuses if their daily performance score doesn’t fall below 50%. The problem with the new scheme is that each cancellation results in a drop of about 15% in their score while good service is only rewarded with a score increase of 1-4%.

Go-Jek has yet to make a public statement regarding this demonstration, which comes just over one month after the last big demonstrations carried out by Go-Jek drivers throughout the country due to decreases in the per kilometer rate the company pays its partner drivers.

Motorists are urged to avoid Jalan Kemang Selatan, where the Go-Jek office is located, because the drivers have reportedly blocked the road, causing traffic jams extending all the way to Jalan Kemang Raya. This was Google Maps’ live traffic reading of the area at 3:21 pm:

Authorities have not given any estimates as to when the area will clear of traffic.
