An inter-city train bound for Solo, Central Java, this morning crashed into a Transjakarta bus and a car at the Gunung Sahari railway crossing in Central Jakarta.
The incident occurred at 4:23 am. Both drivers of the bus and the car sustained injuries from the crash and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The police believe that the blame for the accident lies on the gate operator at the railway crossing.
“Right now, based on witness accounts, it’s suspected that the gate operator was late in shutting the railway crossing [preventing road vehicles from crossing],” said AKBP Budiyanto, head of the Law Enforcement Sub-Directorate for the Jakarta Metro Police’s Traffic Directorate, as quoted by Kompas today.
Both the bus and the car have been removed from the scene of the accident. Train operations and road traffic have reportedly returned to normal.
Accidents between trains and road vehicles on railway crossings are pretty common in Indonesia. Just last month, a train crashed into a car carrying 8 at a gate-less railway crossing in Serpong. The last major railway crossing collision occurred in Bintaro on December 2013, when a KRL Commuterline crashed into a gas tanker, killing 7 people.
