A taxi crashed into the waters of Jakarta Bay in Tanjung Priok port early this morning, killing four passengers inside.

The victims were all identified as crewmen of a boat docked at the port.

The police believe that the incident occurred at around 2 am, when it was raining heavily.

“That’s why we think the taxi driver wasn’t able to see the body of water in the area,” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Grand Commissioner Awi Setiyono, as quoted by Warta Kota today.

A search and rescue team was dispatched at 4:30 am, who managed to locate and pull the taxi out of the water some time later.

However, the whereabouts of the driver are not yet known.

“We’re still in the process of locating the taxi driver,” Awi said.

Update: Okezone reported that the police found the deceased body of the driver at 10 am. An investigation is currently underway as the taxi driver turned out to be unlicensed and that the area of the port where they drowned was off limits to public transportation vehicles.
