Do you even disinfect, bro?: Indonesia orders strict health precautions as gyms set to reopen

Disinfectant spray is going to be an essential gym item as Indonesia looks set to lift restrictions on indoor exercise activities.

COVID-19 Task Force spokeswoman Reisa Broto Asmoro said that gyms, yoga, pilates and aerobic studios located on green zones — areas with low transmission of the coronavirus — are allowed to reopen. However, all such facilities must enforce added health and social distancing protocols.

“Observe a minimum distance of 2 meters between visitors. [The facilities] must provide hand wash stations or hand sanitizers. Convey to members that they are better off bringing their own equipment and not use communal equipment,” Reisa said during a press conference yesterday.

As the whole point of going to the gym is about using communal equipment (imagine having to lug around a bench press station everywhere you go), gym-goers will be required to wipe down equipment with disinfectant before and after use — a common courtesy that, in our experience, has been sorely lacking in most Indonesian gyms.

Other standard precautions include temperature checks upon entry, wearing a face mask during exercise, and reducing the use of air conditioning in favor of outside air circulation where possible.

As of June 21, there are 92 green zones in Indonesia, with the only Jakarta region making it on the list being the Thousand Islands, which aren’t exactly famous for its gyms.

However, before yesterday’s announcement by the government, some major gyms have reopened while enforcing added health precautions.
