Child protection commission urges netizens not to share high school bullying video and make it viral

For the past few hours, one video showing a few Jakarta high school girls being viciously bullied by their seniors has been making the rounds on social media.

The Commission for the Protection of Indonesian Children (KPAI) today urged netizens not to share the video on social media because it contained disturbing images involving underage children.

“Please don’t make this video viral. Let law enforcement officials and the relevant parties handle the issue,” said KPAI head Asrorun Ni’am, as quoted by Kompas.

KPAI has also requested the assistance of the Ministry of Communications and Information to block the video online, though they admitted that preventing anything from going viral is tough. True enough, we can still easily find multiple mirrors of the video on video hosting websites.

While we have seen the video in question, we have decided not to share it on our site due to its disturbing content, which includes the bullies humiliating the victims by pouring bottled tea and flicking cigarette ash on them, among other things.

According to Kompas, the video shows five grade 12 SMAN 3 high school girls in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, bullying four of their grade 10 juniors. The bullies supposedly found it inappropriate that their younger victims were spotted partying at a café a couple of weekends ago and decided to teach them a lesson.

There are reports that the case will be settled privately between the alleged bullies, victims and the school, but the police have indicated that they will get involved if the case gets drawn out.
