Ceiling collapses in Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s new Terminal 3

Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport’s recently constructed Terminal 3 was supposed to be a modern, state-of-the-art addition to the travel hub that we could all be proud of, but it has already had quite a few maintenance issues since it partially opened in August to serve domestic flights.

Another one of those issues occurred today when a large chunk of ceiling collapsed near the terminal’s Medical Office.

Luckily, no one was hurt from the collapse. The affected area was quickly shut off and the incident did not cause further disruptions to the airport’s operations.

One of the terminal’s construction contractors, KSO Kawahapejaya, claimed responsibility for the ceiling’s collapse and has pledged to fix it.

“This happened because some time ago there was some ducting maintenance and our team is fixing the ceiling and it will be complete by tonight,” said KSO Kawahapejaya’s Terminal 3 Project Manager Yulianto, as quoted by Warta Kota today.

Worryingly, a ceiling in another part of Terminal 3 also collapsed in September, which brings the quality of the construction work done on the terminal’s ceilings into question. There was also another embarrassing episode back in August when sewage water gushed out from the floor to flood the passenger pickup and drop off area just outside the terminal.

Some experts believe that the construction and operation of Terminal 3 was rushed, leading to several maintenance issues.
