A 12-year-old boy tragically died yesterday in the Jagakarsa district of South Jakarta due to a small landslide, caused by extreme weather, which collapsed his home and injured the rest of his family.
According to the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the incident occurred at around 5:30 pm yesterday, during which time strong winds and heavy rain were hitting parts of Jakarta.
The boy’s house was located near a slope. A landslide toppled a concrete retaining wall that was situated on the slope above the house, causing the wall to fall on the home while its inhabitants were inside.
“[The house stood] on a weak foundation, and then heavy rain [caused the landslide]” said Jagakarsa Sektor X Fire Agency chief Paryo, as quoted by Detik yesterday.
The 12-year-old boy died in the collapse, whereas his parents and two siblings, ages 5 and 4, were injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
Just last month, extreme weather in the city also caused two separate landslides on the same day in Jagakarsa. Luckily, there were no reported casualties then.
