If you have plans to spend the Chinese New Year long weekend in Bogor, think again, as the city is intensifying the enforcement of its new odd-even traffic rule.
The Bogor city administration imposed the rule — which only allows cars with license plates ending with an even number to be driven in the city on even calendar dates and vice-versa for odd dates — starting on Feb. 4 and is effective every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The rule was designed to limit mobility in the city on weekends, as well as to discourage out-of-towners (read: Jakartans) from going on weekend getaways in the city, until at least Feb. 17 and may be extended if deemed necessary.
With the Chinese New Year long weekend coming up, Bogor Mayor Bima Arya said he’s bracing for a possible onslaught of holidaymakers coming into the city, which boasts a number of popular destinations for Jakarta tourists and is the entryway to the resort town of Puncak.
“This week there will be a long weekend due to the Lunar New Year on Friday. We have to optimize enforcement [of the odd-even rule],” Bima said.
Checkpoints will be set up at six entry points into the city.
Bima said enforcement of the rule last weekend led to a notable decrease of about 20,000 vehicles entering Bogor over two days.
